The same sale on every provider.
Lowest total fees first, counting monthly plan fees. A merchant of record collects and pays sales tax and VAT for you.
Polar is shown on the plan that leaves you the most at your monthly volume. Unless you pick otherwise above, Gumroad is shown on direct sales and PayPal on its checkout rate. Payout, dispute and refund costs are covered further down.
How Stripe fees are calculated.
Fee = price × percentage rate + fixed fee
US card processing, United States account.
You keep = price − fee
Price = (target + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate)
Adding the rate to your target isn't enough: the fee also applies to what you add.
Effective rate = fee ÷ price
The fixed fee makes small prices proportionally more expensive.
Stripe charges the percentage on the full amount the customer pays, sales tax included. If you add 20% VAT to a $100 price, the fee is worked out on $120, and the $20 of tax still has to be paid to the tax office. Set the tax rate in the calculator to see that effect.

Stripe fee examples.
The fixed 30¢ is why small prices hurt: it is 3% of a $10 sale but 0.03% of a $1,000 one. If you sell something for under $10, an annual plan or a bundle often saves more than switching providers.
The cheapest fee isn't always the cheapest option.
Stripe is a payment processor. You are the seller, so you register for sales tax and VAT where you have to, collect it, and file the returns. For a SaaS selling worldwide that can mean the EU, the UK and a growing list of US states.
A merchant of record like Polar, Paddle or Lemon Squeezy resells your product and handles that tax for you, for a higher fee. Stripe now offers the same model as Managed Payments, at 3.5% on top of its usual fees. The payment fee comparison puts all of them on one sale.
Stripe fee questions.
How much is the Stripe fee for $100?
On a US Stripe account with a US card, Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢, so the fee on $100 is $3.20 and you keep $96.80. An international card adds 1.5%, which makes it $4.70.
How much is the Stripe fee for $1,000?
$29.30 on a US card (2.9% of $1,000 plus 30¢), leaving you $970.70. The fixed 30¢ barely matters at this size; the percentage does.
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
In the US, 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card payment. International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion adds 1%. In the EEA a standard card costs 1.5% + €0.25, and in the UK 1.5% + 20p. There is no monthly fee on standard pricing.
How do I calculate Stripe fees?
Multiply the amount by the percentage and add the fixed fee: $100 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20. Add any surcharges (international card, currency conversion, Billing, Tax) to the percentage before you multiply.
How much should I charge to receive $100 after Stripe fees?
$103.30. Add the fixed fee to your target and divide by one minus the percentage: (100 + 0.30) / (1 − 0.029). Simply adding 2.9% is not enough, because the fee is also charged on the extra you add.
Does Stripe charge more for international cards?
Yes. A US account pays an extra 1.5% on cards issued outside the US, plus 1% if the payment needs a currency conversion. EEA accounts pay 3.15% + €0.25 on non-European cards, plus 2% for conversion.
How much does Stripe charge for subscriptions?
Stripe Billing adds 0.7% of recurring volume on the pay-as-you-go plan, on top of the card fee. A $20 monthly subscription paid with a US card costs about 2.9% + 0.7% + 30¢, or $1.02 a month.
Does Stripe refund its fee when I refund a payment?
No. Stripe doesn't charge for the refund itself, but it keeps the original processing fee. A lost dispute costs $15 in the US on top of the refunded amount.
Is Stripe cheaper than Paddle or Lemon Squeezy?
Per transaction, yes: 2.9% + 30¢ against 5% + 50¢. But Paddle and Lemon Squeezy are merchants of record that collect and remit sales tax and VAT worldwide. Stripe's closest equivalent, Managed Payments, adds 3.5%. The comparison table above puts every option on the same sale.
